A summit on the construction of interdisciplinary fashion and apparel studies and the launch conference for the third “Academic Month for the Training of High-level Talents” were held at the Great Hall of the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology on Nov 5.

Li Yong, deputy director of the research department of Beijing Municipal Education Commission, Huang Keying, secretary of the BIFT Party Committee, BIFT President Jia Ronglin, along with other senior school staff members, and representatives of graduate students attended the events, which were presided over by Jia.

The summit on the construction of interdisciplinary clothing studies and the launch conference of the third “Academic Month for the Training of High-level Talents” kicked off at BIFT on Nov 5.

On behalf of the institute, BIFT President Jia Ronglin expressed his sincere welcome and gratitude to all officials and experts for their participation in the events.

In his opening speech, Jia pointed out that since the BIFT was approved for the construction of an interdisciplinary platform for fashion and apparel studies in 2023, it has focused on key technologies in the ecological construction of the entire fashion and apparel industry chain, adhered to problem-oriented and task-driven approaches, vigorously strengthened discipline construction, promoted the cultivation of high-level talents, and actively served the needs of the country and the development of the capital in the new era.

During the third “Academic Month for the Training of High-level Talents”, the BIFT plans to hold more than 30 academic activities including round-table forums, academic lectures, work camps, workshops, etc, to fully demonstrate the achievements of the construction of the interdisciplinary platform of fashion and apparel studies and further create a rich educational environment.

Huang Keying pointed out in her speech that the construction of the interdisciplinary platform of fashion and apparel studies is an important opportunity for the institute to strive for advancement and a major project to comprehensively promote the construction of a high-level characteristic university. After more than a year of hard work, the institute has achieved significant results in the regard, driving the interdisciplinary construction to a new level.

She hopes that the institute can take these events as an opportunity to gather experts and scholars at home and abroad to jointly explore new concepts, new paths and new methods for the cultivation of cross-disciplinary talents, jointly promote high-quality interdisciplinary construction and high-level talent cultivation, and contribute wisdom and strength to the cultivation of China’s fashion industry.

Li Yong affirmed BIFT’s unique advantages in the fields of fashionand apparel studies and related subjects.

Li said that exploring the development of emerging interdisciplines is of great significance to building a high-quality education system in the capital. He hoped that the school would further strengthen organized interdiscipline construction, conduct organized scientific research, and organize talent training, strengthen the top-level design, give full play to the spirit of innovation, and be brave to explore new systems and mechanisms for interdiscipline construction, and take the construction of interdisciplinary platforms as an important means to promote the development of BIFT, reflect the institue’s advantages and characteristics, and better integrate into the high-quality development paradigm of Beijing.

Lan Cuiqin, dean of the Graduate School of BIFT and dean of the Frontier Interdisciplinary Research Institute of BIFT, reported on the interim results achieved by 14 teams in the  building an emerging interdisciplinary platform for fashion and apparel studies.

The BIFT also invited some experts to share their experience in interdisciplinary construction and practical application at the summit.

Professor He Renke, chairman of the academic committee of the School of Design of Hunan University, gave a speech entitled Intelligent Design Driven by Human Factors and Cultural Data". He introduced the school's experience in inheritance and innovation in cultural heritage protection, arts and crafts, and fashion design, using digitalization as a starting point.

Professor Zhou Yahui , director of Tsinghua Laboratory of Brain and Intelligence, introduced the case of brain science intelligence generation under the title “Brain-Inspired Network Computing for the Next Generation of Efficient Artificial Intelligence”.

Professor Zhu Meifang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of College of Materials Science and Engineering of Donghua University, gave a speech entitled“Material Innovation and Cross-Leading”, introducing discipline construction, talent training and scientific research innovation from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Professor Zhao Chao, deputy Director of Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University, gave a speech entitled “Design Science: Industry-University-Research Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Construction”, in which he elaborated on the feasibility, necessity and adaptability of interdisciplinary talent training.

Professor Ma Yonghong, director of Postgraduate Education Research Center of School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Beihang University, introduced the development path of interdisciplinary studies from the university level and the discipline level giving a speech on the topic “Organized or Free Exploration: What is Interdisciplinary Studies?”

In his concluding remarks, President Jia thanked the experts for sharing their insights. He said that the BIFT will take this event as an opportunity to learn from the experience of other universities, further strengthen top-level design, and make in-depth plans for the construction of an emerging interdisciplinary platform for fashion and apparel studies and the development of interdisciplinary design, so as to better cultivate high-level talents with profound theoretical literacy and innovative practical ability, and accelerate the construction of a high-level university.
