Sustainability in fashion design engineering focus of SFDE2024

The 2024 International Symposium on World Ecological Deign was held in Beijing on Nov 16.

With the theme “Sustainable Fashion Design Engineering”, the SFDE2024 was hosted by Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, with the support of the World Eco-Design Organization, Computer-Aided Product Innovation Design Engineering Center of the Ministry of Education, and the China Association of Higher Education’s Design Education Committee.

More than 100 experts, scholars, teachers and students from universities at home and abroad, such as Tsinghua University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing Forestry University, Capital Normal University, University of the Arts London, Politecnico di Milano, etc., attended the meeting to discuss how to empower the construction of new quality productivity with ecological design and help achieve high-quality development.

The topics included “Intelligent Sustainable Fashion Materials and Technologies”, “Intelligent Wearables and Sustainable Design”, “Sustainable Fashion Consumption and Data Analysis”, “Technology Empowers Fashion Innovation and Sustainable Development”, and the participants, through their discussions on the topics, tried to explore the innovative dynamics and design insights of “sustainability” in new fashion trends and lifestyle changes.

Professor Jia Ronglin, BIFT president and co-chair of the SFDE2024 academic seminar, and Professor Ying Fangtian of Zhejiang University, which is also academician of the European Academy of Engineering, director-general of the World Eco-Design Organization and deputy head of the China Industrial Design Association, delivered speeches at the opening of the conference.

In his speech, Jia stressed that this academic seminar keenly captures the social opportunities brought by sustainable development and actively advocates a comprehensive leap in multiple dimensions such as industrial structure optimization, production mode innovation and lifestyle transformation.

BIFT adheres to the spirit of openness and cooperation and is committed to stimulating the potential of new quality productivity through ecological design, aiming to explore and promote the implementation path and education system construction of high-quality development. BIFT looks forward to working with academic colleagues to build a bridge of academic exchanges and cooperation, adhering to the scientific and rigorous research paradigm, and continuously deepening the exploration and innovative practice in the field of fashion education, he said.

Ying pointed out in his speech that BIFT, as an important fashion design education center in the world, hosted this academic conference is of great significance and has a far-reaching impact on the sustainable development of fashion engineering in China. As a special consultative status organization approved by the United Nations, the World Eco-Design Organization looks forward to taking this innovative journey with everyone.

In the symposium, Professor Liu Xin, deputy director of the Department of Industrial Design, Academy of Arts and Deign, Tsinghua University, Wang Qian, deputy director of the Styling Center of BAIC and director of the Interior and Experience Design Department, AE Architects CEO Abel Erazo, and Professor Peng Lu, dean of BIFT School of Fashion Accessory, gave keynote speeches on topics such as the important responsibilities of sustainable design, sustainable exploration and innovative practice cases, the sustainability of building materials, and the importance and urgency of sustainable design in the fashion industry.

The excellent paper presentation session was chaired by Professor Liu Li, dean of BIFT Fashion Technology Research Institute. The conference selected eight excellent conference papers for presentation and formed an expert group to evaluate and award the papers.

The symposium had five sub-venues, namely, technology empowering fashion innovation and sustainable development, sustainable fashion consumption and data analysis, smart wearables and sustainable design, smart sustainable fashion materials and technology, and sustainable fashion design engineering.

Forty-five scholars and students focused on the relationship between technology, fashion, and sustainability, and conducted professional discussions and cutting-edge thinking on various fields of sustainable fashion design engineering. During the event, ten review experts gave comments on relevant subjects.
